The European Union appoints a new Counter-Terrorism Coordinator
In July 2021, the EU has appointed Ilkka Salmi as EU Counter-Terrorism Coordinator, whose five-year mandate began in early October.
The motivation to create the above-mentioned position was the terrorist attack that took place on March 11, 2004 in Madrid. The main tasks of the coordinator include, among others:
- coordination of work on combating terrorism carried out in the EU,
- monitoring the EU counter-terrorism strategy,
- taking care of the EU's activity in the fight against terrorism.
I. Salmi will also keep the Council informed about the strategic directions set at the European Union level. Additionally, it will hold meetings with representatives of non-EU countries, international organizations and the private sector, which in turn is to minimize the risk of terrorist attacks.
