BND President: The Islamic State is growing in strength

Bruno Kahl, head of the German Federal Intelligence Service (BND), warns against a resurgence of Islamic terrorism, especially in the African Sahel.

"In 20 years after the terrorist attack on September 11, we still have no control over Islamic terrorist organizations," said the BND head. He also stressed that "the number of people involved in terrorist activities has increased. Al-Qaeda and the so-called Islamic State still exists, spreads, inspires and recruits new terrorist groups with a use of modern technology.

IS continues to gain new supporters, especially in regions where there is a lack of stable power and state structures. This phenomenon occurs not only in the Middle East, but also in the Sahel, the countries of South Africa and, in part, Central Asia.

The BND head pointed out that terrorism is a permanent phenomenon, and that Europe and the US should work together to maintain the ability to analyse and combat terrorism.
