Frontex activity in Lithuania
Due to the growing migratory pressure on the Lithuanian-Belarusian border, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) is increasing its support for Lithuania as a protective measure.
In the face of increasing migration threats, the Frontex authorities decided to take actions aimed at providing immediate assistance to an EU Member State, which is under unprecedented pressure at the state border. In the first week of July alone, the Lithuanian authorities recorded more than 800 illegal attempts to cross the border on the border with Belarus.
The operation, which began with the deployment of a dozen officers and patrol cars, is gaining momentum. Direct help is provided, among others, by troops of Frontex's Standing Border and Coast Guard Corps that assist with border control and surveillance. The agency also provides experts in Lithuania to assist national authorities in collecting data on illegal border crossings and to support the exchange of operational information.
The above activities are aimed at strengthening the eastern flank of NATO and the EU against the increasing practice of illegal migration from Asia and Africa to Europe via the eastern migration route.
