INTERPOL against cyber criminals
INTERPOL Secretary General Jürgen Stock called on police agencies around the world to form a global coalition to prevent the potential expansion of ransomware.
The Secretary General stated that in order to effectively prevent ransomware activities, the same international cooperation should be adopted as is used to combat terrorism, human beings trafficking or the mafia.
The INTERPOL’s call for increased cooperation against ransomware came amid its exponential growth in the wider cybercrime ecosystem, where criminals are changing their operating model to deliver ransomware as a service.
Studies of ransomware attacks conducted on critical infrastructure around the world in the past 12 months have shown that criminals earned $ 350 million in ransomware payments in 2020, an increase of 311% in one year.
