The Union is not giving up its substantial efforts to protect the land and sea border in Greece during the coronavirus pandemic
Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, continues undertaking preventive measures to maintain the security of the union external borders in order to enhance protection of its territory, among others, against the uncontrolled influx of terrorists into Europe through the Balkan region.
One of the results of the aforementioned is the recent decision of EU Member States and associated countries in the Schengen area to extend the deployment of their officers responsible for securing the land and sea borders of Greece, despite the coronavirus pandemic.
At the beginning of April 2020 over hundred officers were transported to / from Greece in connection with the ongoing rotation of teams supporting border controls. Their charter flights were organized by Germany and co-financed by Frontex.
Currently, EU external borders in Greece are secured and protected by 624 Frontex officers from 21 EU countries and associated countries in the Schengen area.
Present activities are part of a broader Frontex strategy for managing external borders and responding to migration challenges. The aforementioned is supposed to contribute strategically to expanding the logistical support of the organization in Greece, Bulgaria and the Western Balkans and to creating standing corps of the European Border and Coast Guard to facilitate its future operations from January 2021.
