Daesh a global and evolving threat

On 9 August 2022, in a joint briefing to the Security Council, UN counter-terrorism officials affirmed that the threat from Daesh militants and their affiliates remains "global and evolving".

The UN counter-terrorism chief presenting the Secretary-General's report indicated that Daesh and its affiliates exploit conflict dynamics, weak governance and inequality to instigate, plan and organise terrorist attacks. In addition, they also exploit pandemic constraints, abuse digital space to recruit sympathisers and have significantly increased the use of unmanned aerial systems (northern Iraq). Tens of thousands of people - including more than 27,000 children - from Iraq and some 60 other countries continue to face enormous security and humanitarian difficulties. The Chief repeated the Secretary-General's call on Member States to continue their efforts in facilitating the safe, voluntary and dignified repatriation of all those still stuck in camps and other facilities.
