Afghanistan's security and economic development

Following the recent UN Security Council report, a conference on Afghanistan was held in Tashkent from 25-27 July 2022.

The report contains alarming details of the activities of terrorist groups, including al-Qaeda, which now enjoy the protection of the Taliban in Afghanistan. It is clear from the description that Afghanistan has reverted to the days before 11 September 2001, when Osama bin Laden, the leader of al-Qaeda, was planning terrorist attacks on New York and Washington.

The main theme of the conference was security and economic development, but there was a strong emphasis on counter-terrorism. More than 20 countries and international organisations attended, including: Iran, Pakistan, China and Central Asian countries, the United States, as well as UN delegates.

During the conference, the Uzbek president called on the Afghan government to show strong will and take decisive action to counter terrorism and cut ties with all international terrorist organisations.
