The latest analysis of the terrorism situation in the EU - Europol Report

On 13 July 2022, the Europol European Union Terrorism Situation and Trend Report 2022 (TE-SAT) was published, providing the most comprehensive and up-to-date picture of terrorism in the European Union.

The report is based on data provided to Europol by EU Member States on terrorist attacks, arrests and judicial decisions made in relation to terrorist offences. TE-SAT discusses in detail the different types of terrorism, including jihadist, ideological, anarchist, ethno-nationalist and separatist terrorism.

Key findings include the fact that so-called 'solo terrorists' remain the main perpetrators of terrorist attacks in Europe. It also noted that those carrying out solo attacks were mainly associated with jihadist terrorism and ideological extremism. The report also included information on the weapons used in the attacks.

Terrorist propaganda disseminated online in 2021 continued to address themes related to the COVID-19 epidemic. The emergence of violent anti-COVID-19 and anti-government extremism, which is not associated with traditional extremist and violent terrorist activities, has been reported in some countries. It typically manifests itself in the form of open threats and incitement to violence content disseminated online.
