UN announces a new global program to prevent and combat terrorism

Terrorist threats and trends continue to evolve. Therefore, to stay ahead of trends, seize opportunities and be more effective, the United Nations Branch for the Prevention of Terrorism - UNODC has developed a new Global Programme on Preventing and Countering Terrorism (2022-2027).

The new programme puts people first in line with mainstream of human rights. Among other things, it will build on the perspectives and contributions of civil society while taking into account gender and age differences and the rights and needs of victims of terrorism. The programme is in line with UNDOC's 2021-2025 guidelines and the 7th Review of the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy.

To introduce the new Global Programme, the UNODC Terrorism Prevention Branch (UNODC/TPB) held a virtual panel at the 31st session of the UN Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice on 17 May 2022.

The new Global Programme on Preventing and Counter Terrorism was developed following consultations with over 70 Member States and a wide range of stakeholders, civil society organisations, think tanks, academic institutions and private sector organisations. It is aimed at supporting UN member states in preventing and combating terrorism through inclusive strategies, policies and practices.

Its official launch is planned for mid-2022.
