Open meeting of the Anti-Terrorism and Sanctions Committee on ISIL and Al-Qaida

On 7 April 2022, under the chairmanship of the Counter-Terrorism and Sanctions Committee 1267/1989/2253, an open briefing was held by representatives of Member States, analysts, policymakers, experts and civil society representatives.

Since 2014, the Islamic State has infiltrated Africa and appears to be gaining strength by taking significant positions in many regions, which raises serious concerns. ISIL's most important affiliates in West Africa are: Greater Sahara, Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, as well as Egypt, Libya and Somalia.

The conference was held in the Economic and Social Council Room at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, with the possibility for interested speakers to join via an online platform. The aim of the meeting was to analyse the evolution of the threat posed by ISIL in Africa and the response of Member States to this threat, and to highlight the perspective of civil society.
