The preventive approach of the Council of the EU on international terrorism
On 19 July 2021, the Council of the EU extended for a further 6 months the sanctions against persons, groups and entities on the EU terrorist list in order to counter terrorism.
The list includes 14 names and 21 groups and entities that have participated in terrorist acts both inside and outside the EU. Both the freezing of funds and other financial assets and/or tightened measures related to police and judicial cooperation in criminal matters apply to those on the list. Moreover, they cannot obtain funds and economic resources from EU entities. The Council of the EU reviews the list at least every six months, based on the regular exchange of knowledge between EU Member States.
Sanctions are preventive actions that allow the European Union to respond quickly to challenges and events that aim at its goals and values. They can be the answer, among others to the potential threat from extremism or terrorism.
