The management of the German intelligence community concerned about the growing security threats

During the hearing of the members of the Parliamentary Control Body of the Bundestag, the heads of intelligence, civil (BND, BfV) and military (MAD) counterintelligence stressed the risks associated with the increased level of espionage and terrorism in Germany.

It was stated that the activity of foreign intelligence agencies in Germany is almost at the same level as during the Cold War and politically motivated killings in the German capital are carried out on behalf of foreign secret services.

According to the civil counter-intelligence the second most severe threat comes from the right-wing and left-wing extremism and extreme Islamism. In line with information provided by the Head of the Federal Office for the protection of the constitution, the number of right-wing extremists in Germany was estimated at 32,000 people in 2019 and the number of extreme left groups was estimated at 33.500 individuals, of which 9.200 are said to be capable of acts of violence.
