Europol warns against the risk of increased irregular migration to Europe
EU Law Enforcement Agency (Europol) has warned that the easing of coronavirus measures may trigger another wave of irregular migration towards the EU.
While irregular migration from Africa to Europe has indeed slowed over the past two months due to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic and increased security measures, a loosening of travel and movement restrictions is likely to result in an increasing movement of irregular migrants to EU, including from high-risk countries.
The newest report by Europol's European Migrant Smuggling Centre (EMSC) published on May 15 indicates that a significant factor contributing to the next wave of illegal migration to the EU in the mid-term, may be coronavirus-related stagnation in Africa and regional crisis of African economies.
