On 12 February 2024, the United Nations will mark the second International Day for the Prevention of Violent Extremism

The International Day for the Prevention of Violent Extremism, celebrated annually on 12 February, highlights the need for effective action to combat violence and extremism around the world. It is an opportunity to reflect on the above-mentioned phenomenon, as well as to mobilise society and authorities to take concrete preventive action.

Violent extremism is a phenomenon that can take different forms and have different motivations. It is often associated with hatred, intolerance and extreme ideological beliefs. For this reason, countering it requires a comprehensive approach, encompassing both social and political aspects.

An important element of action against violent extremism is the education of the public. Promoting tolerance, respect for cultural and religious diversity, and the development of dialogue skills are key to building societies based on understanding and cooperation.

State and international institutions also play an important role in countering extremism through effective legal measures, threat monitoring and international cooperation. Countries working together to share information and coordinate counter-terrorism efforts is essential given the global nature of the threat.

With the International Day for the Prevention of Violent Extremism in mind, society should take decisive steps towards building a more open, understanding and united world. Action taken to prevent extremism is of paramount importance to global security, while at the same time providing a foundation for the peaceful coexistence of different cultures and traditions.
