Counteracting the malicious use of science and technology for terrorist purposes
As part of its anti-terrorist activities, the United Nations analyzes the risks associated with the misuse of science and technology to plan and implement terrorist attacks.
During the Second Counter-Terrorism Week in the last decade of June 2021, representatives of the UN anti-terrorist structures (including UNCCT, UNOCT) and representatives of science and the private sector met. The event discussed issues related to the global impact of technological progress on the international security environment, including in the areas of augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), mass data analytics, nanotechnology and additive manufacturing. The result of the interviews and the information mentioned at that time is the published report, the subject of which is the analysis of the possibility of malicious use of science and technology in the field of the exploitation of weapons of mass destruction for terrorist purposes.
The conclusions of the study are intended to increase the resilience of UN member states against threats related to WMD terrorism, in particular in the targeted use of scientific and technological progress in global anti-terrorist efforts.
