New EU rules for removing terrorist content from the internet

On March 16, 2021, the Council of the European Union adopted a regulation aimed at preventing the dissemination of terrorist content online.

According to the regulation, hosting service providers will be obliged to remove terrorist content or prevent access to it within one hour of receiving an order from the competent authorities of EU Member States.

The law also specifies the scope and definition of terrorist content, and introduces remedies by allowing users whose content has been removed to file a complaint.

The new regulations are to enter into force in 2022.
