22nd Anniversary of the Attack on the World Trade Centre

On September 11, 2001, the world witnessed one of the most tragic terrorist acts in history. The attack on the World Trade Centre in New York was a turning point not only in the history of the United States, but also in the global approach to the fight against terrorism.

Twenty-two years after the horrific events, it is worth reflecting on the evolution of counterterrorism strategies and operations. The attack on the World Trade Centre was a planned act of terror that led to the deaths of nearly 3,000 people and caused great shock around the world. It was also a moment that triggered numerous changes in security policies and approaches to terrorism.

After 9/11, the United States decided to conduct a military operation in Afghanistan to overthrow the Taliban regime and fight al-Qaeda. This decision sparked a long-running conflict that lasted for many years. However, as the years passed, societies and governments around the world began to recognize that the fight against terrorism must take into account not only the military aspect, but also broader social and political issues. Over the years, changes in the approach to combating global terrorism have included:

  1. Strengthening security services: After 9/11, many countries stepped up efforts in security and intelligence services to prevent future terrorist attacks. Numerous legal and financial measures to enhance capabilities to monitor potential threats.
  2. Intensifying international cooperation: The fight against terrorism has become a global endeavour, and countries have begun to cooperate more on information sharing and counterterrorism activities.
  3. Focus on prevention and counter-radicalization: It was understood that the fight against terrorism must reach beyond military action and include prevention and counter-radicalization. Numerous programs have been launched to counter radicalization and social reintegration.
  4. Promoting intercultural dialogue: Many organizations and governments have launched initiatives to promote intercultural dialogue and prevent radicalization through education.
  5. Early conflict resolution: It has been understood that some conflicts and social inequalities can foster radicalization. As a result, there has been an increasing emphasis on conflict resolution and reducing social inequality.

The fight against terrorism remains a global challenge. However, changes in the approach to the problem, such as greater international cooperation, prevention and the promotion of intercultural dialogue, reflect an evolving strategy. With these changes, we can hope that the future will bring fewer terrorist acts and more peaceful solutions to conflicts. It is worth remembering the victims of 9/11 and continuing to work to prevent such tragedies.
